  11. INTRODUCTION
  12.  
  13.     If you are a Newsbytes service subscriber, I hope you will find 
  14. this program useful. I wrote it because I wanted a simple program that 
  15. made the task of reading the news easier, while staying within Windows.
  16. This new versions adds a host of new features:
  17.  
  18.         - Printing
  19.         - Saving a story as text, or appending to an existing file
  20.         - Multi-tasking processing
  21.         - Resizable window up to 1024 x 768
  22.         - Context-Sensitive help
  23.

  25. REQUIREMENTS
  26.  
  27.         - VBRUN200.DLL in C:\WINDOWS, C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM or in a directory
  28.             listed in your autoexec.bat's PATH statement.
  29.         - Windows 3.1
  30.         - 2 mb of RAM
  31.         - Arial TrueType font must be installed for printing to work
  32.             (This is a default Windows 3.1 setup, so as long as you 
  33.             haven't deleted Arial, don't worry about this)

  36. INSTALLATION
  37.  
  38.     The following files are included in the .zip:
  39.  
  40.         3dlabel.vbx
  41.         hmeter.vbx
  42.         newsread.exe
  43.         newsread.hlp
  44.         newsread.txt
  45.         opendlg.vbx
  46.  
  47.  
  48.     Copy all of these files to a directory of your choice.  The first time 
  49. you start the program, it will create a newsread.ini file in that same 
  50. directory. If you have a previous version of NewsReader, you will be 
  51. asked to update your initialization file the first time you run the 
  52. program.  You can add newsread.exe to your whatever Windows shell 
  53. you are using (if it is Program Manager, consult your Windows documentation
  54. if you are unsure).  After you launch the program, set the directory where 
  55. you normally keep your unzipped Newsbyte files, using "Preferences". 
  56. Consult the on-line help to learn how to save this and other settings.

  58.     All the help and explanation is on-line, with dynamic prompts that 
  59. change as you move the mouse, as well as F1 context-sensitive Windows help 
  60. that explains all the functions. Help for the icons on the Button Bar is 
  61. accessed using a right mouse-button click.

  65. BUGS/LIMITATIONS
  66.  
  67.     Please forgive any rough spots.  I don't program for a living, just
  68. for fun!  
  69.  
  70.     - While there is a Printer Setup, you cannot actually choose a printer
  71.       other than the one specified as Default (see Control Panel->Printers)
  72.       You can put your default printer into landscape/portrait, etc. 
  73.       Hopefully this will be fixed in the next version.

  75.     - If a certain odd series of keystrokes is executed, the Newsbytes
  76.       file list may be empty, even though there are files present. Just
  77.       hit Cancel, and try again.  The files are now there.  If I could 
  78.       find this, I'd fix it!  Don't worry, though, most users will never
  79.       have this happen to them - I'm just warning you.
  80.  
  81.     - Sorry about the speed.  NewsReader still takes 15 to 20 seconds
  82.       on a 486/33 to process a normal file.  I hope to rewrite the program
  83.       in Visual C++ this summer, which should improve things.

  85.     - NewsReader 2.0 now recognizes EDITORIALS, CORRECTIONS and REVIEWS,
  86.       three new headings the Newsbyte organization has added.  If they
  87.       dream up any new ones, though, they will end up included with the
  88.       previous story instead of appearing as a separate item.  I will
  89.       try to fix this in the next release, if they add anything!

  95.     This program is freeware, and may be distributed freely, provided all 
  96. the files are included, and not altered in any way.  While NewsReader has
  97. been tested thoroughly, the author is not responsible for anything that 
  98. happens to your system while using it.  You are, as with all programs, 
  99. using this at your own risk.

  105. BONUS
  106.  
  107.     I thought I would include Waveplay, a simple utility that you can
  108. associate with *.wav files.  Click on a .wav file in the File Manager, 
  109. select File->Associate..., then Browse your way to where you put 
  110. waveplay.exe.  Now, a simple double-click on a .wav file plays it.  
  111. Unlike some other programs out there, waveplay.exe does not hijack the 
  112. system - you can continue to work in Windows.  Waveplay is also freeware.
